Microbial Genetics Scientist I


The primary responsibilities of this role, Microbial Genetics Scientist I, are to:

  • Drive experimental design and execute experiments independently;
  • Interpret and discuss data, recognize and troubleshoot problems, and prepare oral and written reports for review by supervisor and senior staff;
  • Develop and implement Microbiology and Molecular Biology methods for the characterization and genetic manipulation of fastidious bacterial isolates;
  • Construct plasmid vectors and create derivative strains for the specific knock-out or overexpression of a wide range of biochemical pathways, intended for mode-of-action studies and Intellectual Property (IP) support;
  • Design protein expression workflows and related activity assays to aid in development of heterologous expression strains;
  • Stay current with literature and latest technological developments in areas of interest, and identify new technologies to expand in-house Microbiology and Molecular Biology capabilities;
  • Optimize bacterial culturing conditions for evaluation and promotion of desired phenotypes;
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety policies and practices.

    Required Qualifications:

    • Bachelor of Science with at least five years of relevant experience OR Master of Science with at least two years of experience OR Ph.D. with at least one year of relevant experience in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or related fields;
    • Established track record of collaborating with a research team and contributing to project strategy, with strong communication, organization, data analysis, critical thinking, leadership, and presentation skills;
    • Experienced in state-of-the-art cloning techniques and vector development for rapidly building parallel DNA constructs for biological studies;
    • Possess exceptional skills in good microbiological practice and culturing of fastidious/undomesticated microorganisms;
    • Capable of designing biochemical assays to characterize candidate strains and expression systems;
    • Computer skills in Office suite and bioinformatics software;
    • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
