needs.Job DescriptionWe have an opening for Weapon Science Training
Program Director in the Design Physics Division (DPD). The WSTP is
designed to develop and strengthen the technical expertise of our
staff through structured coursework and hands-on training, with a
focus on both foundational and advanced concepts in weapon science.
As director of WSTP, you will provide leadership and oversight for
staff participating in the training as well as the instructional
staff. The Director will play a pivotal role in shaping the success
of the WSTP. This position involves coordinating the teaching and
creation of content for both the 1st- and 2nd-year courses in the
program, ensuring that the curriculum meets the needs of the
participants and aligns with the division's strategic goals.
Additionally, the Director will be responsible for securing
additional funding to support both students and teaching efforts as
needed. This position is within the Strategic Deterrence (SD)
Directorate.This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which
includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per
week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid
schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office
and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team
and the organization.This position will be filled at either level
based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring
team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be
assigned if hired at the higher level.In this role, you will
- Oversee the development and delivery of the 1st- and 2nd-year
courses in the WSTP.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to create and refine
course content.
- Coordinate teaching schedules and recruit instructors to ensure
high-quality training.
- Secure funding to support program participants and teaching
activities.
- Monitor program outcomes and identify opportunities for
improvement.
- Foster a collaborative and engaging learning environment for
participants.
- Work with division management to provide evaluation of student
progress to aid in performance assessments.
- Manage and provide oversight for training activities requiring
travel, ensuring all participants are well-prepared for their
travel and that off-site training events are run efficiently and
effectively.
- Perform other duties as assigned.Additional job
responsibilities at the SEL.5 level
- Work in close partnership with the Division leader, Associate
Division Leaders and WSC, WPD, WTED program management to ensure
the WSTP is developing and implementing a comprehensive training
strategy aligned with the organization's goals.
- Responsible for identifying training needs by collaborating
with department leaders and analyzing organizational performance
gaps.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training program through
feedback, assessments, and performance metrics and report on
training effectiveness and employee development progress to senior
leadership.Qualifications
- This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE)
Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another
U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Master's in Physics, Engineering or related field, or the
equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Strong technical expertise in weapon science or related fields.
More specifically, significant experience and subject matter
expertise in research and development related to primary and
secondary nuclear design, ICF design, hydro experiments, or
simulation code computational physics.
- Experience in teaching, curriculum development, and/or
mentoring.
- Proven ability to manage projects and coordinate with
multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and
leadership skills.
- A commitment to advancing the professional development of staff
through structured training programs.
- Experience working with various funding organizations to
support needs.Additional qualifications at the SEL.5 level
- Nationally recognized expert in primary and/or secondary
design, ICF design, hydro experiments, or computational
physics.
- Extensive experience and demonstrated ability to apply, lead,
and develop cutting-edge techniques to address challenges of
National Security.
- Extensive experience guiding and providing strategic direction
for projects to a diverse group of scientists, using expert level
communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to
effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior
management and/or external sponsors.
- Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary
to effectively explain, present, negotiate, advise, and influence
all levels of management.
- Substantial experience sustaining productive relationships with
other divisions, directorates, laboratories, NNSA management,
institutions across the DOE and the Intelligence
Community.Qualifications We Desire
- PhD in Physics, Engineering or related field, or the equivalent
combination of education and related experience.Additional
